Her Story:

He arrived in the late afternoon, when the garden was warm and still. She knew his step before she saw him.

“You’ve been well?” he asked, as though no years had passed.

“Well enough,” she said, brushing soil from her hands.

They spoke of small things — the town, the weather, the roses that had grown higher than the gate. Neither mentioned why he had returned, or why she had never left.

When he finally turned to go, he hesitated, as if expecting her to stop him.

Isabelle only folded her hands gently before her.

Some affections are not lost.
