He entered the room certain of what he would find.
Lantern light, silk, perfume heavy in the air. A woman who understood the language of glances and the gravity of desire.
Seraphina watched him approach, calm, unreadable.
“You’ve heard stories about me,” she said quietly.
He smiled. “Enough.”
He reached for her wrist confident, almost triumphant.
She did not pull away. She only held his gaze.
“And what do they say?” she asked.
“That you never refuse.”
For the first time, something flickered in her eyes not anger, not embarrassment.
Amusement.
She stepped back, slipping easily from his grasp.
“You mistake attention for invitation,” she said softly.
The room did not belong to him. The narrative did not belong to him.
Seraphina was not temptation.
She was choice.
And tonight, she did not choose him.
